The associated FTP site enables document exchange among the participants in the Mound Environmental Management Program.
What follows is some basic information for those who are unfamiliar with downloading files via FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and/or with the expansion of compressed files.
FTP
Most WWW browsers contain a FTP function for downloading files. After clicking on the homepage's link to the document directory you are interested in, locate the specific file you wish to obtain and double click on it. The browser will step you through the choice of the local directory in which to save the file on your computer.
If you have a problem or if your browser does not contain an FTP function, you may download the files directly by using an ftp function on your own computer.
- ftp to the site by typing in "ftp://www.nwer.sandia.gov/snl/" and press (enter)
- log in as "anonymous" and press (enter)
- type in your email address as your password and press (enter)
- type in "cd" for change directory, then (space), then the directory name "mound" and press (enter)
- If you are downloading a file with an ".exe," ".rft" or ".doc" extension at the end of the file name, type in "bin" to set the exchange to binary mode and press (enter). Plain text files (".txt") may be downloaded in the default "ascii" format and you may skip this step. (NOTE: If in doubt, use the binary (bin) mode for transfer. The transfer will be slower, but any binary files mistakenly transferred in the "ascii" mode will be rendered unintelligible.)
- type in "get", then (space), then the name of the file you want and press (enter)
- when the transfer is complete, type "quit" and press (enter)
For Uploading Files...
Use the ftp function on your computer and follow steps 1 through 4 above. At that point:
- type in "cd", then (space), then the directory name "pub" and press (enter)
- if you wish to upload a spreadsheet, formatted word processing, or compressed file , type in "bin" to set the exchange to binary mode and press (enter). For text only files, leave the transfer mode in "asciii."
- type in "put", then (space), then the name of the file you want to place at the ftp site and press (enter)
- when the transfer is complete, type "quit" and press (enter)
Compressed Files
Some of the files available at this site contain graphics (maps, charts and graphs) and are too large to download efficiently unless they are compressed. These files are saved as "self-extracting" archives indicated by a ".exe" extension at the end of the file name.
You may expand (decompress) the file in Windows by double-clicking on them.
If you do not have Windows, type in the file name at the DOS prompt and it will expand itself.
The decompressed files will usually be saved as PDF (Portable Document Format). To open these files, you must have a copy of the Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. The Acrobat program may sbe downloaded from the Mound ftp site (click on the "Supporting Software" link to get to it.)
